LYCON Skin FAQs
GENERAL
By careful screening and curation of our ingredients, we have designed outstanding formulas that are suitable for all skin types.
For example, we look after people with sensitive skin by using ingredients suitable for sensitive skins. In addition, we have also carefully selected non-comedogenic ingredients to take care of oily skins, and a multitude of intelligent hydrating and anti-ageing ingredients to look after dry and mature skins, without over-burdening oily skins. There are scores of effective ways in how this formulation philosophy plays out.
An example is that we might use Shea Butter, Olive Squalane and vegan ceramides to provide hydration and barrier repair that suits dry skin, mature skin, sensitive skin and oily/problematic skin. On the hydration side, we employ a xylitol (a natural sugar) derived complex that brings optimised hydration in a balanced way so that dry skin is looked after without over-moisturising normal or oily skin. One of our main hero ingredients, Yeast Beta-Glucan, is also fundamental in making LYCON Skin products very ‘adaptive’ and suitable for multiple skin types.
Absolutely! There is some sensible fine-tuning or customisation that can be done, depending on your skin type, to find the right products to fit your routine.
For example, someone with oily/problematic skin may decide to use the Radiance Lime Caviar AHA Mask twice per week, while someone with very sensitive skin might prefer not to use the AHA mask.
Similarly, someone with well hydrated skin may choose not to use the Exotic Oil Complex, or might just use it during winter and drying conditions, whereas someone prone to dry skin may use the Exotic Oil Complex on top of their moisturiser every night, as well as in the morning.
All skin types and all age groups can use LYCON Skin products and benefit from visible skin improvements. LYCON Skin has the ability to slow down and diminish chronological ageing and environmental damage for younger skins, and for older skin that has developed skin ageing signs, LYCON skin can significantly reverse the signs of ageing.
Other skin conditions that can be improved include: sensitive skin, skin redness, blemished skin, skin with open pores, dehydrated or dry skin.
"Bioceutical” communicates that our skincare products are built from natural and naturally derived ingredients that are in harmony with our skin (“bio”) and that our formulations are also focused on science, efficacy and real visible results (“ceutical”).
This refers to our holistic formulation approach, where we have sought to make each product adaptable and responsive to multiple skin types and conditions simultaneously.
A prime example is our use of Yeast Beta-Glucan - a multi-functional biotech ingredient that delicately communicates with all skin types to enhance skin’s natural protective, anti-oxidant, detoxifying and restorative functions.
INGREDIENTS
When we are formulating LYCON Skin products, one of the ingredient selection filters we use allows us to make sure we are keeping comedogenicity risk very low. As such, the overall ingredient properties, formulation choices and the interaction of the ingredients are carefully considered and monitored.
In addition we also perform in-house panel testing of potential formulas and include panellists with blemish-prone skin. We have found that LYCON Skin formulas have very low comedogenic risk.
However, we can’t claim zero risk, of course, as rare individuals can have varied responses that can be ‘outliers’ compared to the general population.
LYCON Skin uses neither parabens nor sulphates.
‘Clean’ skincare is ultimately in the eye of the beholder, but we heavily rely on gentle, natural and naturally derived ingredients in formulating LYCON Skin.
We haven’t uncritically bowed down to every last TikTok fad though – we have remained rational and balanced in creating the LYCON Skin range which focusses on natural but effective ingredients for the long term.
Yeast Beta-Glucan has several important modes of action: it enhances the skin’s natural protective, anti-oxidant, detoxifying and restorative functions, while also calming and soothing the skin.
Yeast Beta-Glucan works with the skin’s own natural functions and potentials, and importantly, it works extremely well in synergy with other carefully selected LYCON Skin active ingredients.
This makes Yeast Beta-Glucan the natural choice as the signature ingredient in LYCON Skin, as well as its high suitability and affinity for multiple skin types.
Yeast Beta-Glucan is a multi-functional biotech ingredient that delicately communicates with skin cells and boosts the skin’s natural protective, antioxidant, detoxifying and restorative functions. It also has a soothing function, so it is a superb all-rounder when it comes to achieving beautiful and happy skin.
Panthenol (Pro-vitamin B5) is a gentle and soothing moisturiser that also improves skin barrier function. Panthenol is a pre-cursor (or pro-vitamin) that your skin quickly converts to vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). Vitamin B5 helps to maintain skin in a soft and supple state.
AHAs, otherwise known as Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, are naturally occurring acids found in various fruits, sugar cane, and even sour milk!
AHAs help to exfoliate the skin by loosening the bonds that hold together the top layers of dead skin cells. In other words, they speed up skin cell renewal and reveal fresher, softer, smoother and more radiant skin.
AHAs also serve to reduce excess skin discolouration and even out skin tone. There are some other benefits too – AHAs can refine skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and lactic acid can even boost skin ceramide production.
Furthermore, the exfoliating effect of AHAs can allow other ingredients to penetrate and achieve quicker and better results.
One thing to keep in mind though – ‘fresher’ skin is more prone to sunburn and UV damage, so don’t forget to use a moisturiser with SPF, such as LYCON Skin Multi-Protection Day Cream SPF15, when using products containing AHAs.
Some of our LYCON Skin products incorporate a blend of three indigenous Australian Plum Extracts – Kakadu Plum Extract, Burdekin Plum Extract and Illawarra Plum Extract.
These plums are regarded as ‘superfruits’ due to their remarkably high antioxidant levels. For example, Kakadu plum has about 100x the Vitamin C content of oranges, while the anthocyanin-rich Illawarra plum has about 7x the antioxidant level of blueberries.
This blend of Australian superfruits provides potent antioxidant activity (to protect your skin from damaging free radicals) and it also contributes to hydration and the activation of anti-ageing processes (for instance, Vitamin C boosts collagen production).
TIPS & TECHNIQUES
It is very similar to micellar water in that they both employ the same type of mild micellar surfactants, but the LYCON Skin Micellar Facial Cleaning Gel is a thicker and more powerful type of cleanser that also effectively removes difficult residues such as eye makeup, without sacrificing gentleness.
The Micellar Facial Cleansing Gel is to be rinsed off, not left on like micellar water, which we believe gives a better overall result for your skin and less product is used, compared to micellar water.
It really comes down to personal choice, but generally speaking, it makes sense to put aqueous rich products (e.g. hydrating serum) on first, followed by emulsions (day creams, night creams etc.), followed by oil-based serums, like Exotic Oil Complex.
This is because an oil-based serum can slow or hinder the absorption of water-soluble ingredients. Oil-based serums can be regarded as ‘locking in’ moisture, so it makes sense to apply them last.
It’s not a hard and fast rule though, for example, people with very dry skin might like to sparingly use Exotic Oil Complex on very dry patches before moisturiser application.
Typically, you should exfoliate between once and twice a week, depending on your skin type.
Coarser or congested skin can typically handle exfoliation up to twice per week, while normal, sensitive, mature, or thinner skin types should only exfoliate once a week.
For sensitive and thinner skin types, LYCON Skin Gentle Cleansing Scrub can be used together with LYCON Skin Micellar Facial Cleansing Gel to provide a more gentle exfoliation.
It very much depends on the purpose of the mask. Our Deep Hydration Hyaluronic Mask can be used as an overnight or sleeping mask, with great results.
Our Radiance Lime Caviar AHA Mask and Superfruits 3 Minute Detox Mask should both be used more in the 3–20 minute range, rather than left on overnight.
Facial skin can vary greatly, and often has differing skin concerns and conflicting needs on different parts of the face.
A multi-masking technique is where you apply a different mask on different areas of the face, neck and décolleté simultaneously to target individual skin needs in the different areas.
An alternative method is to use multiple masks one after the other, which is known as a multi-layering technique.
Multi-masking with LYCON Skin Face Masks:
Oily areas on the T-ZONE benefit most from the Superfruits 3 Minute Detox Mask, which absorbs oil, draws out impurities, and mattifies the skin's surface without drying.
Hydration is important on the cheeks, neck and décolleté, and under eyes. The Deep Hydration Hyaluronic Mask quenches dry skin to restore a youthful, dewy glow, and plumps out fine lines and wrinkles.
Uneven skin texture is common on the chin, nose and sides of the face. The Radiance Lime Caviar AHA Mask gently exfoliates and brightens dull, uneven skin patches.
Multi-layering with LYCON Skin Face Masks:
First apply the Radiance Lime Caviar AHA Mask all over the face, neck and décolleté to exfoliate and brighten the skin, leave on 15-20 minutes and wash off well.
Then apply the Deep Hydration Hyaluronic Mask to deeply hydrate and calm, leave on 15 minutes and wash off.
Then apply Superfruits 3 Minute Detox Mask thinly with a brush in upward and outward strokes, leave on until completely dry to achieve firming and lifting results.
